How can I get my chihuahua house broken ?

I am trying to house train my chihuahua. Sometimes she will go on the pad, but sometimes she won’t. Are there any tricks to training her ?

Chihuahuas can be difficult to house break. Mine never would use the pad. I finally put her outside one day and left her for several hours. The weather was nice and she had plenty of food, water, and shade. She marked her territory in the back yard and I didn’t have much trouble with her after that, but I did have to pay attention to when she was eating and drinking and send her out quickly afterwards.

We’ve moved twice since we got our dog and each time I’ve made sure she went straight to the back yard as soon as she got to the new house. I let her stay there long enough to find her "territory" then let her in the house. She now tells me she needs to go out, even in the middle of the night. The only time she has an accident in the house is when I’m gone and my husband has his nose stuck in the TV and isn’t listening when she asks to go outside.

If you’re in an apartment or can’t let her outside for some reason, you may need to confine her to one area long enough to make her understand that she needs to do her business there and nowhere else in the house.

If she has already urinated on the carpet or even other flooring, try cleaning the spots with vinegar and water. It will help prevent her returning to that spot to repeat the dirty deed.

Good luck and enjoy your precious dog!

How do I help my chihuahua stop being afraid of a new kitten?

We rescued a little kitten from a shelter the other day. I already have a 7 month old chihuahua/poodle and he is absoluting terrifed and will not stop barking at the kitten and trying to charge him but when the kitten retaliates with a hiss, he freaks out. I am afraid they will never get along. They cannot even be in the same room together so far.

Any ideas?

we had that same kind of problem our dog would not stop barking at this kitten we rescued, what we did was every once in a while we would take the kitten into the same room as the dog, and sit on the floor holding the kitten, some one else would sit on the floor holding the dog directly in front of us, of course the dog barked, but we just kept going in there and so the dog relised that there was nothing to be afraid of, and now they and pals. so i suggest you go in there with the kitten every day and show your dog that there is nothing to be afraid of soon he will figure it out. good luck!

How can I train my chihuahua not to be aggressive?

I adopted a chihuahua (Selena) from a breeder and she is one year old (she has already been spayed as well). The previous owner never took her anywhere, and the dog was never around anyone but her and her husband. Because of this, she is aggressive towards strangers and to my fiance; she will try to bite anyone who tries to touch her, except for me. Is there anything that I can do to reverse this behavior, or is it too late to socialize her? All tips are appreciated!

Chihuahua’s are agressive and energetic creatures. I have a teacup. They need lots of exercise that would help in etting ride of some aggressive behavior..play with her and teach her tricks..and have your fiance sit down and play with her too along with you…find a way to teach her tricks and teach your fiance to do the exact same thing (that way it’s consistent) and perhaps she will grow to trust him. It’s not to late to train her but it sounds like a lot of work at this stage. Introduce her to only one or two people at a time because they are over anxious creatures and may feel threatened by too many people in the same room or surrounding her. Mine is the friendliest dog there is but if there are too many people around he generally retreats and backs off. If someone were to try and pet him in that phase, the dog looks at it like a threat. I would talk to someone who knows about CHI’s and your vet. they may even have a better solution.
good luck

How do you know a Chihuahua is pure bread?

What features can I look for when trying to buy a pure bread Chihuahua? Also, I can’t decide whether I want a male or female dog. What are the positives/negatives associated with each sex?

You have to have ACK regrister papers. Here are the Positives of males:

Male dogs tend to be "lovable slobs" and "good ol’ boys."

Male dogs tend to be more outgoing, more vigorously affectionate, more "in your face."

Male dogs tend to be more stable and reliable in mood, less prone to emotional swings.

Male dogs tend to be clumsy and silly and prone to acting like oversized kids.

Male dogs mean well and are easy to love.

On the negative side:

Male dogs are more apt to test their owners and engage in dominance struggles, especially during the hormonal adolescent months, which can last a long time — from about six months old all the way up to two or three years old in larger breeds.

Male dogs have obvious genitals, which can make for embarrassing moments if they become aroused or decide to lick themselves when Grandma is visiting. Some males are enthusiastic humpers who will mount stuffed toys, other dogs, sometimes people’s legs.

Most male dogs lift their leg to urinate — a consideration if you have expensive shrubbery or lawn ornaments. Some males are territorial markers who spray urine on every vertical object (ranging from telephone poles to blades of grass) to mark it with their scent.

Females:
Female dogs tend to be more subtle than males. They’re affectionate on their own terms. They’ll request or demand petting, then reassert their independence by walking away when they’ve had enough.

Female dogs tend to be quicker to learn and are not as easily distracted during training sessions.

Female dogs are less likely to be openly defiant or to engage in blunt power struggles or dominance challenges — yet they can be clever, passively resistant, and manipulative about getting their own way.

Female dogs are prone to mood swings and emotional theatrics. They can be sweet one day (or one hour!) and grumpy the next.

Female dogs are experts at The Dirty Look and The Sulk.

Females go into heat.

Good luck choosing!

If a 7 week old Chihuahua was diagnosed with Parvovirus, what are his chances of living?

I bought a 6 week old Chihuahua. After a week he was very lethargic and threw up. I took him to the vet the very next day, and was diagnosed with Parvovirus. Does he have a good chance of survival? Right now he is in Treatment.

The quicker you get treatment the better the pups chances of recovery. Only time will tell if your pup makes it. I hope so.
Best of luck!

Does anyone have a female Chihuahua puppy they want to get rid of in Indiana?

My little girl really wants a puppy, we already have a full grown chihuahua but she wants one of her own, and I read in a book somewhere that Chihuahua’s always know their own kind. So I figured anothehr Chihuahua was the best way to go. They are all so expensive in the papers, I need a free one or a really cheap one.

Try an animal shelter, otherwise you won’t be able to get one free, unless it has major issues with it’s health (which will end up costing you more money) or personality. If you want a Chihuahua, then just pay the price, otherwise get another small dog breed.
